The Kawasaki GPz900R Motorbike
All through the seventies bike manufacturers particularly the Japanese giants had been competing to produce the most powerful & fastest bikes the time.
Times were moving on & 1983 Honda unveiled s VF750F which became an instant classic with s V4 engine that not only gave what was then the incredible power 86bhp but also handled well & is responsible for the current Honda offerings today.
In 1981 Kawasaki s GPz1100 put the company right back at the front the superbike class & then 1984 delivered an almost knockout blow to the competition the form the GPz900R.
In fact the GPz900R had very long life as far as superbikes go being continuous production for fifteen years was that good!
Introduced at Leguna Seca December 1983 Pee Wee Gleason covered the standing quarter less than 11 seconds & took the bike to over 150mph & handled so well that dominated the Production TT bog standard format.
Like the GPz1100 there was little true innovation the bike terms parts but did have liquid cooled 16 valve 4 cylinder engine which was first at the time. With the bike completely wrapped flowing. aggressive looking bodywork was very impressive to see.
The frame was just tubular steel spine but without the usual down tubes which saved weight & allowed the use completely redesigned box section sub frame made from aluminium.
The design brief had been to combine traditional Japanese raw power motorcycle but this machine had to handle well also.
The design the GPz900R which included monoshock suspension state the art brakes & fluid dynamics marked the beginning the superbike we know today.
Kawasaki later introduced the GPZ1000RX & then the ZX-10 but they were both outlasted by the GPz900R even though they were intended as replacement models!
